| Biafra was a short-lived independent republic which seceded from Nigeria on 30 May 1967. Following
a bloody war, Biafra surrendered and was reunited to the Republic of Nigeria on 15 January 1970. Nigeria was a British
Protectorate and the monetary system adopted by the Independent Republic of Biafra was thus based upon the Sterling system though
the coinage did not feature the portrait or titles of Elizabeth II. |
